THE STORY BEHIND DESK

How it started...
In the mid 80's, Wim van der Linden was recruited by the Eindhoven Press typesetting department. A printing division owned by Philips. His assignment was to modernize the typesetting department. The plan Wim presented consisted of purchasing Scitex imaging equipment from Israel, a laser typesetting machine from Disc in Belgium and so-called Microcomputers from Digital Equipment. All state of the art equipment at that time. To make it all work, Wim had designed a special typesetting program that automatically could format pages based on a database. In total, this project cost 10 million Dutch guilders – It was a bold plan and cost a huge amount of money at that time.
It took Wim 12 months to develop the typesetting program called Caty (Computer Aided Typeset) and it was the first of its kind in Europe. A fully automated page setting facility. The first fully automatically created catalogue was a catalogue of the exhaust company called van Wezel. Soon followed by a catalogue in three languages, German, Dutch and French, for the German mail order company Neckermann.
In 1989, after great success over the last years and already known as a bold visionary, he got the opportunity to attend the Seybold conference in San Francisco. There, the first Laser Disc was presented and Wim saw a huge potential in this technology. Back in the Netherlands he contacted Philips and came in touch with CD-I (Compact Disc Interactive) and along with various investors, including Philips, Wim founded the third CD-I Studio in the world called 'Codim Interactive Media' for creating professional and consumer CD-I programs.
During these years, Wim learned to understand the need of bringing more order and control into content and the added value of a database for structured publishing. In 1994, Wim started the company MultimediaBrains, an innovative company for Database Publishing solutions. One of the first projects was to automate the business cards for Rabobank Netherlands. Hotelplan soon followed with the production of over 100 different travel brochures per year. With this project, the name DESK was introduced for the first time. At that time, Wim understood this was the way to make Content Marketing simple and the basics of Desk Content Marketing were established.
In 2005, Wim decided to bring DESK up to a standard product. After a few years of development, OAD was the first customer where DESK-4 was installed. In less than 6 months, the solution was in production. In the first year of using DESK, OAD saved over more than 3,7 million Euro. Over 1 million images were stored in DESK to match with the holiday descriptions on their websites and catalogues. DESK provided the correct information and automatically generated all web content and catalogues. The cost savings were immense for OAD with a pay-off ratio of just a few months! Savings totaled over 3.7 millions Euros per year. Sundio Group followed soon as a happy DESK user with currently more than 48 websites in eight languages and it is clear that Wim and his developing team have turned DESK into a big success. Well designed for easily managing very complex product structures with many variables, fully automated and optimizing the publishing output.
In a nutshell, this provides an insight in how Wim has been striving to create and deliver solutions which are innovative in their setup throughout his career. Create collaborative work flows, simple to use for non-IT specialists (read: daily users) and provide the ability to reach the right customers with the right information at the right time in the right way. Not only online but offline as well.
